Jusqu'en 1963, le programme, uniquement littéraire, comportait 12 œuvres. Il est passé à 10 en 1964 (exception du concours 1969 limité à 7). En 1971 apparition des 4 ou 5 "auteurs retenus pour l'option linguistique" choisis parmi les 10. En 1977, apparition des 3 options A, B, C (cette dernière désormais sans programme). Le B. O. précisait : « Les candidats s'attacheront à rendre compte des phénomènes linguistiques que présentent les textes soumis, qui seront hors programme. Les analyses précises et les discussions théoriques devront apporter la preuve que les candidats sont au fait des recherches contemporaines en linguistique, qu'ils ont su s'approprier les concepts fondamentaux de leur discipline qu'ils manient la langue d'usage, mais aussi qu'ils connaissent la métalangue propre à la linguistique anglaise. »'
