Jusqu'en 1963, le programme, uniquement littéraire, comportait 12 œuvres. Il est passé à 10 en 1964 (exception du concours 1969 limité à 7). En 1971 apparition des 4 ou 5 "auteurs retenus pour l'option linguistique" choisis parmi les 10. En 1977, apparition des 3 options A, B, C (cette dernière désormais sans programme). Le B. O. précisait : « Les candidats s'attacheront à rendre compte des phénomènes linguistiques que présentent les textes soumis, qui seront hors programme.
