A very nice way to introduce reported
speech is to record a phone conversation and play it to the students. They hear only one person speaking and have to guess what the second speaker is saying. (for example: they hear a girl saying: Hello David, where are you calling from? And then she says: Oh you are in Tel Aviv, when did you arrive?... Two days ago? So why didn't you call me earlier? etc.etc.) Let the students listen to the conversation and afterwards elicit the sentences they remember. Write them in reported speech on the board. Then give them a work page with the original conversation and let them match direct to indirect speech. Afterwards elicit the differences... Vera Lachmanovich (ETNI, con permiso).
