Materials and Resources on America's "First Nations"

'Man did not weave the web of life
: he is merely a strand in it.
Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.'
- attributed to Chief Seattle, "This Earth is Precious" - 1854

  • Quote 1 -"We only ask an even chance to live as other men live.... We ask that the same law shall work alike on all men... Let me be a free man - free to travel, free to stop, free to work, free to trade where I choose, free to choose my own teachers, free to follow the religion of my fathers, free to think and talk and act for myself." - Nez Percé Chief Joseph.

  • Quote 2 - "Could it not be contrived to send the small pox among the disaffected tribes of Indians? We must on this ocasion use every stratagem in our power to reduce them. . . You will do well as to try to inoculate the Indians by means of blankets, as well as to try every other method that can serve to extirpate this execrable race. I should be very glad your for hunting them down by dogs could take effect, but England is too great a distance to think of that at present..." - Sir Jeffery Amherst, 1763, Commander in Chief of British forces in the Colonies, letters to his field commander.

  • A Setting - The Axe, the Plow and the Hearth: "In the early days, before the coming of the white man, many Indians lived in what we know as Fairfield County, violet Township, and the village of Pickerington. These were chiefly Wyandot Indians, but there were also representatives of other tribes such as the Shawnees and the Mingos. Cornstalk was the chief of the Shawnees, and the famous Indian orator, Logan, of the Mingos..." Pickerington pioneer heritage.

  • Advice on Teaching Children about Native Americans - "Much remains to be done to counter stereotypes of Native Americans. Teachers must provide accurate instruction about history but also about the contemporary lives of Native Americans."... This digest by Debbie Reese, a Pueblo Indian who works in childhood education, is in the public domain and may be freely reproduced.

  • Some poetry, and a fine contact:

    Morning Star

Whispered to rose-cheeked youth
In time of supple limb, but
Ecstatic song in 'West Wind' dispelled
So incongruous a face
Before silver rise'morrow. ˆ Chris Angel.

  • THE FIRST AMERICANS: A long time ago North America was very different from the way it is today. There were no highways, cars, or cities. There were no schools, malls, or restaurants. But even long, long ago, there were still communities... and there are still Indian communities today.
  • GONE WEST VIDEO - The Growth of a Nation, videocassette, for introducing the Westward Movement or suggesting topics for closer study. A broad-brush picture of America's expansion from 1650 to 1900. Animated maps, period art, reenactments in historic settings, show students how Spain, England, and France yielded up vast territories to settlement by the United States. Among the subjects covered: the Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark, the fur trade, war with Mexico, life on the Santa Fe and Oregon trails, gold in California, homesteading, and the transcontinental railroad. The program ends with a review quiz - a VHS video with 21 photocopy masters, guide. ˆ No publicity intended.
